Noise levels and duration

Sound level, dB

Exposure time per day

Even a very short exposure to noise is harmful to hearing if hearing protectors is not worn. If you are exposed to noise levels and durations indicated by the red area, you must use hearing protectors –In the green area you may still wish to use protection.

The risk for noise induced hearing loss depends on the level of sound energy reaching the ear. Sound energy includes the average sound level during the time of exposure. High levels of noise exposure over a short period affect the level of sound energy much more than lower levels over longer periods.
